The Winfield Community Volunteer Fire Department along with the Sykesville Freedom District Volunteer Fire Department, Gamber Volunteer Fire Department, Mt. Airy Volunteer Fire Company, MD States Attorney's Office/Carroll County District Court of Maryland, Carroll County Public Schools, Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Creamatory, Carroll Hospital Center, and the Carroll County Sheriffs took a proactive step in educating local high school students about making mature decisions when alcoholic beverages are involved. On April 10th and 11th the Winfield VFD assisted in a two day program involving South Carroll High School Juniors and Seniors which encouraged them to think about personal safety when alcohol is involved. The program challenged those involved to make mature decisions and recognize that their actions affect others beside themselves. An accident was staged where parents and students watched the incident unfold. A Sheriff arrested the student playing the drunk driver as the engine crews extricated the patients from the vehicles. The Winfield Fire Department also provided lunch for this event. The lead coordinator of this event was Amy Carney, NREMT-P of the Sykesville Freedom District Fire Department.
