Sykesville Fire House 3 Alarm Blaze/ Building Collapse
By Assistant Chief Zach Schneider
February 12, 2010
On Thursday morning February 11th Winfield crews were dispatched to assist Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department with a building collapse at their station with an odor of gas throughout the structure. It was quickly noticed by the Sykesville members that a 2 inch natural gas line was sheared off by the collapse. At approximately 8:20, a fire broke out in the collapsed social hall.
Engine 142 helped as an attack pumper for the interior crews, and Engine 141 assisted with laying 800' of 5' supply line providing water supply for ladder pipe operations. The ruptured natural gas line fed the fire with allowed it to spread quickly. The fire quickly spread and additional manpower was requested to help with the extinguishment. BGE arrived and had to dig up Route 32 to access a shutoff valve, and around 12:00 the gas was shut off and the firefighters we're able to stop the blaze.
Over 200 firefighters and 50 pieces of apparatus from Carroll, Howard, Baltimore, and Frederick Counties assisted with the 3 Alarm Fire and no one was injured.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of the Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department throughout this difficult time and we will continue to assist them in everyway possible.
