On Christmas Eve at approximately 9:30am Sykesville Fire Department responded for a report of an order of smoke in a town-home apartment in the 900 Block of Marimich Court. Upon arrival Engine 123 upgraded the incident to a building fire once they encountered smoke coming from the second floor. Crews made entry and were able to extinguish the fire located in a second floor bedroom were they also located a deceased occupant. The fire was contained to the second floor bedroom with extensive smoke damage to the rest of the townhouse as well as an adjacent unit. The home did have working smoke alarms. The Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the incident.
